In today’s 24-hour, self-service society, few customer-oriented personalized services remain. Delivery is a service that is almost extinct in retailing, and is the ONE commodity we as retail florists have to keep customers coming to us. If we are to continue our type of personalized delivery service, there are certain areas, which need to be updated or modified to meet the demands of a changing business world. This text covers and looks at those areas and discusses considerations for various delivery circumstances.

Cut flowers, even though they have been separated from the parent plant, are living, actively metabolizing plant parts. These parts undergo the same basic aging process as the entire plant — only quicker. However, the rate of deterioration can be slowed down considerably by supplying the cut flower with it’s basic needs.

Although the floral marketplace has become highly sophisticated and competitive including floral businesses of all kinds, consumers are as cost and quality conscious as ever. Young adults and baby boomers make up the largest portion of today’s market. They are highly service-oriented and want the most for their hard earned money. In selecting the proper advertising medium, we must keep the consumer in mind. How does our product or service meet their needs and/or demand? Florists must be committed to a solid marketing plan and a strong promotional effort to communicate their shop’s image, product orientation and price level to the desired targeted market.

Visual Merchandising is the art of displaying merchandise in a manner that appeals to the eye of the consumer. It sets the context of the merchandise in an aesthetically pleasing fashion, presenting the product in a way that would bring the window shoppers into the shop and turn into customers and buyers of our products. Visual merchandising includes window displays, signs, interior displays, and any other special sales promotions. The success of many retail businesses can be attributed to the mood or atmosphere created by exterior, window, and in-store displays. Customers return to those shops just to see what is happening or what is new. Visual merchandising (display) is the most inexpensive way to attract those customers.

This course “Principles of Design”, might well be called “Tools of Design”. These principles are not arbitrary rules: they are constant guidelines. They are the tools of all the arts, and no artist can vary them until he has mastered them. A careful study and understanding of these principles of design enable one to express his personality in floral art. It is through this mastery that distinction and individuality are created and reflected in design.

This increase in indoor gardening has helped the florist business to become larger each year Many times you are asked questions about these plants that you cannot answer. The objective of this course is to help you be able to provide some answers to the questions raised by your customers.

The goal of Daily Business Procedures for the Retail Florist is to acquaint the individual with the basic definitions and business procedures needed to operate a floral shop on a day to day basis. This course is designed to teach you the basic daily business procedures needed to operate your flower shop on a daily basis. This course is not intended to be a general accounting course. The double entry system and accounting principles are not covered in this course. Those subjects are best left to a general accounting course or to your shop’s CPA or accountant.
